Spearfish, S.D. – Black Hills State University Head Men’s Basketball Coach Bradd Schafer announced today the signing of Joey Mitchell for the 2011-12 basketball season.  Mitchell, from Hitchcock-Tulare High School, is currently entering his senior year after leading his football and basketball teams to the S.D. state championship game as a junior.

“We are extremely excited about adding Joey (Mitchell) to our basketball family,” said Schafer.  “He is a tremendous person, student, and athlete.  He will be a great addition to our program as we make the transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II.”

As a standout quarterback on the football field Mitchell led the Patriots to a state title in 2009 with a record of 12-0.

In basketball, Mitchell earned First-Team All-State honors helping the Patriots to the state championship game.  The Patriots eventually fell to White River 63-66.  During the 2010 state basketball tournament, Mitchell led his team in scoring averaging 18 points per game.
