Spearfish, S.D. – On Saturday, February 6, Black Hills State hosted “Coaches vs. Cancer” to benefit former Yellow Jacket Ethan Dschaak during his battle with cancer. Dschaak, the former head boy’s basketball coach at Sturgis Brown high school, was diagnosed with cancer in early November.
The night generated over $4,000 for the Dschaak family. Volunteers sold t-shirts with slogan “I hate cancer.” which both the Black Hills State coaches and Valley City State coaches wore. The volunteers also held a raffle and a silent auction during the event. The items for the silent auction were donated by local businesses and individuals.
“Ethan loves basketball and the Yellow Jackets,” said Black Hills State head women’s basketball coach Mark Nore. “We wanted to show our support for Ethan and his family. I want to thank all of those who donated, especially our fans. Cancer has touched all of our lives in some way. I am glad we were able to help out Ethan during his fight against this terrible disease.”
