Silva to present high school activities clinic - Top

Tony Silva, athletic trainer at BHSU, will present at the 48^th annual South Dakota High School Activities Association Clinic (SDHSAA) clinic next week in Aberdeen.

Silva's program July 28 at 1 p.m. and 2:10 p.m. will focus on sports injuries. The three-day conference will also feature several clinicians, sports rules meetings and all-star games.

San Jose assistant to head BHSU basketball program - Top

San Jose State University assistant coach Michael Kruszynski has accepted the men's head basketball job at Black Hills State University.

Kruszynski, 36, takes over for Mike Olson who resigned this spring to accept the head coaching job at Moorehead (Minnesota) State University.

The new coach brings a successful record to Spearfish that includes an average of nearly 22 wins a season as a head coach at Independence Community College, Independence, Kansas, where he directed the program from 1991 to 1998. His overall record there was 151-70. His 1995 team was 29-4. That team along with his 1997 squad won conference titles and he was twice named Jayhawk Community College Conference coach of the year.

As an assistant coach at San Jose State he was part of a coaching staff that turned the basketball program around in one year from a 3-26 record to a 12-16 record with a finish in the top half of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) and a place in the conference tournament.

“The varied experience he's had at a number of different levels including junior college, four-year schools, and at the Division I level brings a wealth of knowledge to our program,” said Dave Little, BHSU athletic director. “His success as a head coach has been extraordinary.”

Kruszynski said the main reason he is leaving San Jose is to become a head coach once again.

“I've always been a student of the game and have tried to better myself wherever I've been,” he said. “I've listened and learned about the game from a lot of successful coaches. I believe I have a good grasp of the game and have the ability to get that point across.”

What he liked about basketball at Black Hills State was the program's winning tradition.

“That appealed to me and the fact that I have the opportunity to step in and continue that success. The school's commitment to the true student athlete was also appealing.”

He described his style of basketball as “aggressive play, together with tough man-to-man defense and being able to push the ball up the court.”

The first things Kruszynski plans to do when he arrives at the BHSU campus is to set up meetings and talk to the returning players as athletes and as people. He also wants to get involved with the community.

“I've looked at what Mike Olson has done to build the program and how he's kept the lines of communications open. I want to continue that success, with my style in the process,” he said.

He plans to get started right away by assessing the team's strengths and weaknesses. With five seniors graduated, he wants to find out who will step up and play.

“The puzzle at hand is set; we may have to add a piece to the puzzle to make it successful.”

A native of Chicago, Ill., he graduated from Mary University in 1986. He earned a master's degree in athletic administration and business from Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg in 1989.

Kruszynski began his coaching career as head junior varsity basketball coach at Mary University in 1985. He served as an assistant coach at the University of North Dakota the following year and then as an assistant coach at Central Missouri State from 1987 to 1990. He was an assistant coach at Independence College before taking over as the school's head coach.

He and his wife, Cathy, and children Alexa, 3, and Eric, four months, will be moving to Spearfish as soon as they can make arrangements.

Minutes of the June CSA meeting - Top

The CSA Council met June 8 in the Pangburn Little Dining Room. Present were Susan Hemmingson, Ellen Boyd, Colleen Gustafson, Marilyn Luscombe, Paulette Palladino, Corinne Hansen, Candy Creager, Becky Dovre, Deatta Chapel and Fred Nelson.

The meeting was called to order. Minutes from May meeting were read and approved. Marilyn Luscombe read the treasurer's report .

In old business the council discussed the CSA scholarship fundraiser picnic. The date of the picnic was changed to Aug. 3 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Ida Henton Park. In case of inclement weather the picnic may be moved to the Market Place. Several people volunteered to help arrange this event. Marilyn Luscombe and Ellen Boyd will arrange prizes and announce the scholarship drive. Paulette Palladino and Becky Dovre will make arrangements for food. Becky Dovre requested help to set-up the day of the picnic. Fred Nelson recommended that Linda Torgerson and Tom Wheaton be asked to help with the committee. He also suggested that Carolyn Skallerud be asked to auctioneer the baked goods. The committee discussed several options for having a canopy.

Corinne Hansen will contact Donna Jones to see if she has accepted the CSA scholarship.

The next meeting is scheduled for July 13 at 9 a.m. in the Pangburn small dining room.

• National Weather Association (NWA). Several $500 grants are available annually from the NWA to help teachers in grades K-12 improve the education of their students in meteorology. Deadline Aug. 1, 1999.
