BHSU receives grant from the National Geographic Society - TopBlack Hills State University recently received notice that research funding from a $20,470 grant will be supplied by the National Geographic Society. The grant is designated for field work in Argentina and lab work at BHSU. The funding is for studying plant fossils in Argentina and comparing the fossils found there with those from the Great Plains of North America.
Gabel found fossils of grasses in Argentina during a trip two years ago which were about eight million years old. They were the first fossils of their type found in South America. They have given Gabel and a former BHSU student Jeramiah Smith of Gillette, Wyo., the opportunity to compare the Argentine fossils with those they found previously in North America. Smith is now attending graduate school at Colorado State University in Fort Collins. According to Gabel, “The goals of the new project are to discover which plants were present in South America during the time when the Great Plains were becoming grassland in North America.” The study will compare South American fossils with their North American counterparts. This will allow researchers to see how particular groups of plants have changed over the last eight million years. The study will also let the researchers draw conclusions about the environment of northern Argentina at the time when the fossil plants were alive. Gabel said, “The amazing thing is that no one has previously reported the types of fossils I found earlier, and which we will be looking for on the upcoming expedition.” Mid- and Late Miocene age fossils (five million to about 13 million years before the present) of both plants and animals are common in the Great Plains of North America. Due to the abundant fossils and sophisticated analysis techniques, scientists now know much about the changes which occurred in organisms and the environment of the North American Great Plains. “I predicted that similar fossils could be found in South America, and that with the discoveries of more plant fossils the knowledge of the South American flora and environment will expand greatly,” said Gabel. Woodburn display features Leland Case library - TopThe Leland D. Case Library for Western Historical Studies is highlighted in the Woodburn display case. Highlighted in the display are photographs, manuscripts, and realia from a few of the collections including those of David B. Miller, Father Szalay, Thomas Odell and Carol Jeffries. Committee appointed for coach search - TopPresident Thomas Flickema appointed a committee to begin the search for a men's head basketball coach at Black Hills State University and David Little, BHSU athletic director will serve as committee chairman. Flickema says the men's basketball position will be advertised nationally through various media sources and at regional universities. “Preliminary contacts regarding the basketball job indicate a strong interest in the position,” said the president. The BH athletic director said, “The committee has been formed under university policy and will be accepting applications through June 12, 1999. We will screen the applicant pool down to a workable number and begin the selection process soon after the closing date.” Members of the committee are chairman Little, Betsy Silva, Steve Meeker, Josh McNames, Scott Graslie, and Jim Alcorn. Coach Mike Olson recently notified university officials of his decision to leave BHSU and take a head coaching position at NCAA Division II Moorhead (Minnesota) State University. Olson leaves BHSU after nine seasons and a 179-90 record including four conference titles and four NAIA Division II national tournament appearances. BHSU Today Newspaper wins award - TopThe Black Hills State University Today newspaper won first-place with special merit recognition from the American Scholastic Press Association (ASPA). The BHSU student newspaper was judged among the top eight papers from colleges and universities across the country entered in the competition with an enrollment over 2,501. The Today paper received 955 points out of a possible 1,000. According to ASPA, “First place with merit is given to a publication that scored over 900 points and in the opinion of the judge, was an outstanding overall example of scholastic publication in format, content, and presentation.” Jennie Morris, editor and chief, and Terresah Hall, A&E editor, received recognition from ASPA in the category of the best investigative story with a work titled “KBHU and BHTV face lack of value...” The paper is under the supervision of Steve Babbitt, assistant professor of journalism/photography. This year's paper was directed by senior editors: Jennie Morris, editor and chief; Max Wetz, assistant editor; and Alan Carroll, photo editor. Health services advisory board meets - TopMembers of the health services administration advisory board met recently with Black Hills State University officials to review the health services administration major and business offerings at BHSU. The annual board meeting is held to review the health services administration (HSA) major, seek directions for the program, assess internship potential and recommend changes if necessary. The program just completed its first year at BHSU and has been well received with a number of students enrolling for the major and others in the program acquiring internships with area health-care provides. “The purpose of the practicum/internship is to expose students to the real world of health-care administration and management,” said Dr. Nancy O'Neill, assistant professor in the health services administration program at BHSU. “It also provides health-care organizations with the ability to assess the student's employment potential within their own organization.” Advisory board members are Peter Henry, executive director of the VA Black Hills Health Care System; Adil Ameer, president and CEO for Rapid City Regional Hospital; Blayne Pummel, chairman for Wellmark Inc.; Beth Benning, municipal finance officer for Spearfish; Michelle Leach, chief executive officer for Sioux San U.S. Public Health Services Indian Hospital; Kathryn Langwell, managing director of Health Economics Practice of Barents Group; Will Lantis, COB for Lantis Enterprises Inc.; and Peter Thoreen, executive director for Black Hills Healthcare Network.
