BHSU Update

Legislative interns selected at Black Hills State

Four Black Hills State University students have been selected as legislative interns for the 1999 session of the South Dakota Legislature.

BHSU students working with the 74th Legislature are: Edward Hacker, a junior, political-science major from Allen; Katie Malinski, a sophomore, elementary-education major from New Prague, Minn.; Nicole Nachtigal, a senior, political-science major from Kimball; and, Jason Smiley, a senior, political-science major from Rapid City. The session begins January 12th and runs through the first week in March.

Twenty-three university students are chosen from throughout the state. The internships are divided among Republican and Democratic office holders based on proportional numbers.

Dr. Tom Hills, professor of political science who directs the university's internship program, said a total of 96 BHSU students have served as interns since 1978. Also, the university has placed 13 interns with lobbyist groups, and one with the governor's office.
