This past Saturday was a big weekend for the Yellow Jacket football team as they entered the game 0-2. Valley City State University visited Spearfish on Saturday who the Yellow Jackets will play two times this year. This first game is considered non conference. The second game BHSU will travel to Valley City at the end of the season for the game that counts for the DAC.
In the first half the Yellow Jackets had the lead 6-3 when Chauncey Calhoun took an interception back for a touchdown to make the score 10-6. Valley city would eventually score again to make the score 17-6. The last three minutes of the first half the Yellow Jacket offensive unit drove down the field to score and cut the lead to 17-12 at halftime.
In the second half the Yellow Jackets outscored Valley City State 25-0 to make the final score 37-17. “We were very physical in all three aspects of the game. We recorded some huge hits on special teams in the second half” said Coach Scott.
Offensively Black Hills State University really came off the ball well creating running lanes. “Our running backs did a great job with yards after contact” added Coach Scott. Freshman quarterback Drew Hodgs really settled down and got into a groove throughout the game. “Drew is still learning and is improving each game. He really competes and learns from his mistakes” said Coach Scott.
On defense the Yellow Jackets were stunned early as Valley City State showed some things they hadn’t seen before. At Halftime, the defensive staff made some adjustments which helped slow down the Viking attack holding them to 0 points in the second half. “The defensive staff and players really showed great patience figuring out Valley City State’s offensive attack” added Coach Scott.
