Great Defensive Effort Not Enough

An inspired defense led by many upper classman played a great game not allowing any points after the first quarter. “Our defense really controlled the tempo after they scored on a 7 yard drive and a 45 yard drive” said Coach Scott. The defense played a great game but it wasn’t enough as the Yellow Jackets fell short to University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire with a score of 14-3.

In the first quarter the Yellow Jackets special teams made their only mistake of the game giving up a blocked punt where Eau Claire recovered it at the seven yard line. “Other than the one mistake our special teams really had a solid performance” added Coach Scott. The Yellow Jackets also had a fumble that Eau Claire turned into a touchdown bringing the score to 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Offensively the Yellow Jackets put some really good series together but still continued to have the same breakdowns. “We really lost focus and made a lot of mental mistakes. We are not discouraged because all the mistakes we made can be corrected” said Coach Scott. In the second half BHSU came out aggressive really trying to throw the ball and give freshman quarterback Drew Hodgs a rhythm. The Yellow Jackets added a field goal in the second half to bring the score to 14-3 which would also be the final.

“Our defense needs to maintain their intensity going into this weekend. We as a staff have to do a better job correcting the mistakes we made today during the week” said Coach Scott. The Yellow Jackets will be at home again this Saturday as they take on Valley City State University at Lyle Hare Stadium. Kickoff will be at 1:00pm.
