This past Saturday the Yellow Jacket volleyball team traveled to Crete, Nebraska for an NAIA Opening Round matchup with #18 Doane College. The Tigers defeated the Yellow Jackets in four games 23-25, 23-25, 25-19, and 22-25. The Yellow Jackets wrapped up their season as DAC Conference Tournament Champions and an appearance in the NAIA National Tournament for the second straight year. BHSU went 24-12 on the season which was their fourth straight year with 20 or more wins.
The Yellow Jackets were led by senior Kristin Engle who had 20 kills on the afternoon. Engle also collected eight total blocks, two solo. Junior Maggie O’Neill had 16 kills. Senior Setter Mandy Brumfield led all setters with 42 assists. Doane College was a perfect 10-0 on the season at home this year. The Yellow Jackets looked like they had the momentum in game three and early in game four but the Tigers were able to make some crucial plays late to finish the BHSU season.
“It was disappointing because we played very hard but just didn’t make the plays down the stretch in the three games that we lost to come out on top,” said Head Coach Jhett Albers.
The Yellow Jackets had five players that finished the season with DAC honors. Kristin Engle was named 1st Team All-Conference and DAC Senior of the Year. Maggie O’Neill was also named DAC 1st Team All-Conference making it her second straight year on the 1st Team. Engle was a four –time 1st Team All-Conference selection in her four years at BHSU. Mandy Brumfield, senior Carina Sweet, and senior Kayla Haines were all named 2nd Team All-Conference. “Our seniors were the backbone of this program for the past four years. They should be very proud of their accomplishments and the success that they have had,” added Coach Albers. The seniors won a remarkable 92 matches over a four-year span.
