Graduate Endorsements

The School of Education offers courses leading to endorsements in Early Childhood/Special Education, Middle School, Pre-Kindergarten, Special Education, Math Specialist, and Science Specialist. Check with graduate studies coordinators for specific course requirements. Endorsements are not recorded on the students’ transcript. Students must apply to the South Dakota Department of Education in Pierre to add a certificate endorsement(s) to their teaching certificate.


Early Childhood SPED

The requirements for the Early Childhood SPED endorsement are as follows:

  1. An approved program in  early childhood special education
  2. 24 semester hours in child development or early childhood special education to include the courses listed below

*Course in General Psychology
*Course in Child Growth and Development
*Course in Teaching Students with Exceptionalities
*typically taken in undergraduate degree program

  • ECE 511 – Guidance for Young Children
  • ECE 513 – Early Childhood Curriculum
  • ECE 517 – Methods of Early Childhood Education
  • SPED 510 – Behavior Management of Exceptional Children
  • SPED 513 – Serving Students with MR, DD and Sever Disabilities
  • SPED 531 – Identification and Assessment in Special Education
  • SPED 560 – Family Systems and Professional Collaboration
