For more than 20 years, Black Hills State University’s Donald E. Young Sports and Fitness Center has been a hub of community activity that brings in thousands of visitors. Next weekend the best Division II track and field competitors from South Dakota, Colorado, New Mexico and Nebraska will converge at the Young Center for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Indoor Championship.

Nearly 40 years ago, Dr. Mary Caton-Rosser spent time hiking Yellowstone’s backcountry lugging her zoom lens and snapping photos of awe-inspiring creatures – grizzly bears, eagles, hawks. Since then, those photos have taken on a variety of forms and are now part of a multimedia community exhibit titled “Trails to Tales: Seeking Sense of Place in Prints and Perspectives” that are now on exhibit throughout Belle Fourche.

HLC Mark of AccreditationThe Higher Learning Commission (HLC) will visit the BHSU campus April 15-16 as a part of its comprehensive evaluation of the University. In preparation for this periodic evaluation, the public is invited to submit comments regarding BHSU and its academic programs.

Plans are moving forward on a new, state-of-the-art residence hall for Black Hills State University which connects two existing halls and provides for a vibrant community setting for students.

The new hall is estimated to break ground in early summer of 2014 with a completion date of summer 2015. When completed, the residence hall will be the first new hall built in nearly 50 years.

A hands-on workshop, “Create a Website with WordPress,” will be held Thursday, March 7 at the University Center-Rapid City, room 103. The workshop is divided into two sessions. The morning session will be from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., and the afternoon session will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Black Hills State University music and theatre graduate Tyler Raad will perform a concert Friday, Feb. 22 at 7:30 p.m. in the Clare and Josef Meier Recital Hall on the BHSU campus. A reception will follow the performers. Admission is by donation which will benefit scholarships for students of the Johanna Meier Opera Theatre Institute.

More than 40 former Black Hills State University track and field and cross country runners returned to campus recently to participate in the 21st annual Stadium Sports Grill BHSU Alumni Mile. The weekend-long event, held in conjunction with the Dave Little Invitational, included a Friday night social at the Stadium Sports Grill in downtown Spearfish, and an after-race luncheon in the BHSU Yellow Jacket Hall of Fame room.
