Adam Merchen loves history, whether it is history books, movies or simply someone relaying a story of a historical event. The students in Kelly Kirk’s U.S. History course were able to see Merchen’s enthusiasm firsthand during the fall semester. Merchen, a resident of the Northern Hills Training Center, was one of several community members who were able to expand their knowledge through the Black Hills State University Visitor Pass program.

A Black Hills State University geology class received a new perspective on the area’s geological formations when they spent a day in December touring the 300 level of the Sanford Underground Research Facility, the former Homestake Mine. Dr. Abigail Domagall’s students were the first from BHSU to have an opportunity to go underground.

Science writing, though many times an arduous task, is a key component in introducing the public to new discoveries and the people behind these discoveries; translating the latest results from academic language into words that mean something to the outsider; and putting research into the context of everyday life. Black Hills State University will recognize 229 candidates for graduation during the University’s 166th commencement ceremony Saturday, Dec. 14 at 10 a.m. in the Donald E. Young Sports and Fitness Center. Degrees for the fall 2013 BHSU graduates include nine masters, 196 bachelors, and 24 associates.
