The Jacket Journal, Black Hills State University’s student newspaper, recently earned a first place award in the 2013 American Scholastic Press Association’s (ASPA) annual newspaper competition. Each year the ASPA awards the top college and high school literary magazines, newspapers and yearbooks in the country for the work produced by their staffs.

Rilda Means has known what she has wanted to do since she was a junior at Red Cloud Indian School – help change the stigma of the Pine Ridge Reservation. Means was one of more than 400 graduates earning degrees Saturday during the 165th Black Hills State University Commencement Ceremony. Means, who received her bachelor of science in political science and American Indian Studies, was also one of the 34 Native American students graduating – the highest in the University’s history.

Black Hills State University mass communications students gained on-the-job training from professionals in the field during a recent job shadow day in Denver.The event was sponsored by the Public Relations Society of America, the nation’s largest community of public relations and communications professionals. Five students from the University’s PR Club attended the shadow day.

Black Hills State University will hold a musical tribute in memory of Guido Della Vecchia, a prominent Spearfish and Black Hills figure who devoted his life to promoting music and the arts.Della Vecchia died last month at age 82 from complications from pneumonia. The celebration of his life through music is Sunday, April 28 at 4 p.m. in the Clare & Josef Meier Recital Hall and will feature the BHSU choirs, Black Hills singers and music by international artists.

More than 400 candidates will be recognized for graduation during Black Hills State University’s 165th commencement ceremony Saturday, May 4 at 10 a.m. in the Donald E. Young Sports and Fitness Center. Candidates for the spring 2013 BHSU graduation include 45 master’s degree candidates, 362 bachelor’s candidates and 22 associate degree candidates.

Black Hills State University will be hosting a music camp for high school students to provide them with the knowledge needed to start a career in music under the guidance of the University’s music faculty.

The BHSU “So, You Want to be a Music Major” music camp, open  to high school students who have completed ninth grade through college, is scheduled for Aug. 24.

Dr. David Diamond, a long-time professor at Black Hills State University, recently celebrated his 50th year in broadcasting. A South Dakota native, Diamond taught at BHSU for more than 10 years following an amazing radio career that included a well-known radio show in Los Angeles and experience working with numerous big names in the music world including Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, and the The Doors.
