Dakota Roots, a web-based program to assist individuals who are interested in career opportunities in South Dakota, has helped over 400 people from 43 states find those opportunities and relocate to the state. Over 2,000 people from all 50 states, including many BHSU alumni, have shown interest in moving to South Dakota if given the right career opportunity. Nearly 40 businesses have also expressed interest in starting up or expanding into the state.

The Black Hills State Players will present a children’s theatre performance of Assignment: Earth, What Kids Can Do To Save the Planet. The show, which will be performed by a group of children from the Spearfish community, will premiere in the Woodburn Hall Theatre Friday, June 13 at 2 p.m. Additional performances will be held Saturday, June 14 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, June 15 at 2:30 p.m.

Approximately 500 people were at Black Hills State University recently for a presentation by former U.S. President Bill Clinton. The nation’s 42nd president addressed the standing-room only crowd for more than an hour.

Sen. John Thune will address approximately 375 graduates during the 155th commencement ceremony at Black Hills State University Saturday, May 10 at 10 a.m. in the Donald E. Young Sports and Fitness Center gymnasium. Randall Morris, South Dakota Board of Regents member, and Hugh Palmer, BHSU Alumni Association president, will also speak during the ceremony.

Black Hills State University alum Bill Kohn, class of 1967, donated $10,000 to establish the Robert and Kathleen Kohn Scholarship Fund for athletic scholarships, to honor his parents who have held long ties to BHSU.

In a surprise announcement, Kathleen Engle, a 1980 graduate of Black Hills State University who now teaches physical education at the middle school in Newcastle, Wyo., was named to the National Teacher Hall of Fame.

Stacy Lowry GeerThe BHSU Alumni Association recently presented the Young Alumni Achievement Award to Stacy (Lowry) Geer, a 1998 graduate of the University who is a practicing veterinarian and co-owner of Camelot Pet Castle kennel in Gillette, Wyo.

Representatives from BHSU and five other South Dakota universities will host an Information Night Thursday, April 24 from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at the Higher Education Center-West River in Rapid City. The representatives will be available to discuss course, degree, and financial aid options for Rapid City area students.
