Erica Merchant has spent several months restoring the intricate details of wall panels surrounding medallions in the opera house’s foyer.  The Black Hills State University art instructor started the process in April with the help of Dean Kalamos, a master painter from Washington, D.C., who works as a lead decorative painter at the Library of Congress.

Black Hills State University assistant professor Dr. Andy Johnson's innovative ideas on inquiry-based instruction in teaching radioactivity and ionizing radiation are being recognized in this week’s issue of Science magazine. Johnson’s essay “Radiation and Atomic Literacy for Nonscientists” was chosen as this month’s Science Prize for Inquiry-Based Instruction (IBI).

Vinny Guadagnino, star of the hit MTV reality show ”Jersey Shore,” is coming to the Black Hills State University campus Thursday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. to share his story of living with anxiety and offer advice on emotional health.  Guadagnino’s presentation will be held in the Donald E. Young Sports and Fitness Center.

A productive conversation of race and prejudice in South Dakota cannot take place without addressing the history of the Black Hills, according to Jeffrey Viken, chief judge of the U.S. District Court for the District of South Dakota. Viken spoke on race and prejudice during a recent presentation at Black Hills State University.

The Black Hills State University annual alumni art show is currently on display through Friday, Oct. 25 in the Ruddell Gallery, located in the David B. Miller Yellow Jacket Student Union. The event which features the artistic talents of University graduates is the longest ongoing exhibit at BHSU.

Black Hills State University’s annual Swarm Days parade and homecoming football game is rescheduled for this Saturday, Oct. 19. Originally scheduled for Oct. 5, the Swarm Days festivities were cancelled due to Winter Storm Atlas that hit the Black Hills dumping more than three feet of snow in some areas of the Northern Hills.

A hands-on workshop, How to Create a Website (without special software or computer programming!) will be held Wednesday, Nov. 6, at the Black Hills State University Governor’s Electronic Classroom (GEC) in the lower level of the E.Y. Berry Library-Learning Center, Room 009. The workshop is divided into two sessions. The morning session, Website Basics, will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 noon and the afternoon session, Create a Website using WordPress, will be held from 1 to 4 p.m.
