The Black Hills State University photography student Julieanne Morse from Spearfish recently returned from a nine-month deployment with South Dakota’s National Guard 129th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment where she teamed up with a broadcast journalist and documented the daily lives of the troops.

Black Hills State University has once again been ranked as one of the nation’s top institutions when it comes to services and programs for America’s student veterans. Military Times announced its “Best for Vets: Colleges 2014” rankings Monday with BHSU making the list for the second year in a row.

Thousands of veterans return home each month with a goal of going back to college. As veterans transition back into civilian and academic life, higher education institutions such as BHSU and the University Center are increasing support, developing programs and providing resources to help make the transition from military service into academia smoother.

Black Hills State University has been named to the 2014 list of Military Friendly Schools by Victory Media, a veteran-owned business and publisher of G.I Jobs and the Guide to Military Friendly Schools. This is the fourth consecutive year the University has been on the list which recognizes the top 15 percent of higher educational institutions nationwide that are most dedicated to supporting America’s service members and veterans as students.

The empty table draped with a white tablecloth was prominently placed in the Black Hills State University dining hall last Friday so that every student, faculty, staff and community member passing by could remember those who were prisoners of war and those who are missing in action.

Karen Berger’s year so far has been busy. She is in her final semester at Black Hills State University and currently interning at the Outdoor Campus West in Rapid City all while maintaining her duties as part of the National Guard.

Three Black Hills State University student organizations were recently honored by the South Dakota Board of Regents for their outstanding academic, community, and leadership service.

Swarm Advertising Solutions, Yellow Jackets Vets Club and ShutterBuzz were recognized during the BOR meeting this week.

Black Hills State University has been ranked among the 2013 Best for Vets four-year colleges. The list, put out by Military Times, ranks the schools based on surveys sent in by the universities.

BHSU was ranked in the top 70 schools in the nation that are deemed best for Vets based on a survey that demonstrated widespread efforts by schools to accommodate vets and active-duty service members.

More than 20 million men and women will be honored this week for their service to this country. One of those is Black Hills State University senior Karen Berger. BHSU will honor veterans Wednesday at the University’s newly established Vets’ Center.

Berger, an outdoor education major, recently returned from a yearlong deployment to Afghanistan with the 842nd National Guard Engineer Company of Spearfish, Belle Fourche and Sturgis.
