Black Hills State University is using a nearly $25,000 grant from the Wellmark Foundation to begin a new community-wide partnership that will focus on the local food economy and other locally-produced goods in the Northern Hills area. A kickoff for Spearfish Local will be Saturday, June 7 at Clare and Josef Meier Hall and include a half-day event with free workshops for adults and children as well as a free community-wide supper featuring food from local producers.
“We are celebrating local food producers in Spearfish and the surrounding areas by giving them a venue to showcase their goods with a large community supper,” according to Katie Greer, BHSU sustainability coordinator. “The supper will be casual and barbeque-style including locally raised beef for hamburgers and strawberry rhubarb crisp for dessert.”
BHSU is one of 19 organizations throughout Iowa and South Dakota to be awarded a grant from the Wellmark Foundation, a nonprofit organization that seeks to improve the health of communities in Iowa and South Dakota and provides support to nonprofits and public entities to help communities establish or expand health initiatives.
“Spearfish Local is unique because it is bringing passionate community organizers together with like-minded University faculty and more than 4,000 students who can contribute to community health and wellness through internship, class projects and service learning,” Greer said.
Greer and Dr. Rachel Headley, BHSU Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) liaison, worked together on the grant proposal. The grant also funds BHSU student interns for the fall, spring and summer semesters, Headley said.
The kickoff event is geared toward families with several workshops for both adults and children including organic gardening, yoga and healthy snacks. A’viand’s, BHSU’s dining services, is working with local producers for the free community supper.
