BHSU athletes take the plunge for Special Olympics

 
 
 More than 20 Black Hills State University student-athletes from seven different sports and one head coach dipped into icy waters last weekend and raised more than $2,300 for Special Olympics South Dakota (SOSD).
More than 20 Black Hills State University student-athletes from seven different sports and one head coach dipped into icy waters last weekend and raised more than $2,300 for Special Olympics South Dakota (SOSD).

The BHSU athletic department was proud to see the Yellow Jacket athletes show their support for SOSD by “Freezin for a Reason.” The Northern Hills Polar Plunge in Spearfish raised a total of $48,000 with a total of 219 people taking the plunge.

Yellow Jacket volleyball players, Holly Hamlin, elementary education major from Highmore; Meghan Sipe, biology major from Cheyenne; and Shayla Wickett, biology major from Glenrock, Wyo., made the plunge along with women's basketball players Bailey Kusser, biology major from Highmore; Taylor Trohkimoinen from Newell; Logan Cowan, biology major from Highmore; and Gabby Haefs, elementary education major from Rapid City.

Head men's basketball coach, Bradd Schafer, took the plunge with his players Cameron Anderson, physical education major from Gillette, Wyo., and Brady Bisgaard, physical education major from Belle Fourche.  The women's golf team had a strong showing with Ashlyn Pearson, psychology major from Gillette, Wyo.;  McKenzie Watson, business administration – management major from Belle Fourche; Paige Erickson, human services major from Pierre; and Kaitie Stevens, psychology major from Chadron, Neb., each jumping. 

Rodeo team members Ty Clarke, from Wessington; Jesse Oliver, exercise science major from Lemmon; and Kit Miller, general studies major from Amidon, N.D., made the plunge – cowboy hats, vests and all.  Football members that participated in Sunday's event were Damon Goldhammer, business administration – tourism major from Henderson, Nev.; Luke Whalen, physical education major from Pierre; and Richard Escalante, Spanish major from Garland, Texas. Track and Field plungers included: Rachel Hellekson, exercise science major from Rapid City; Trisha Koch, exercise science major form Owanka; and Codi Huebner, exercise science major from Rapid City.
