Black Hills State University enrollment is up 1.3 percent this fall with 4,464 students. A 17 percent increase was seen in the number of first-time freshmen enrolled, and housing on campus is at nearly 99 percent capacity.

Enrollment at BHSU, the third-largest university in South Dakota, includes students from each of the 66 counties in South Dakota, 44 states, and 29 different countries.

Not only has the University’s enrollment shown a steady increase, 9.5 percent over the last five years, the number of students who complete BHSU degrees also continues to increase. Over the same five-year period, the number of individuals completing BHSU degree programs has increased by nearly 14 percent.

“We are dedicated to helping students achieve their goal of earning a University degree and are truly focused on retaining and graduating the students who enroll at Black Hills State University,” BHSU President Kay Schallenkamp said, noting that the University has also seen success in its initiatives to enroll and graduate underrepresented populations. During the May 2013 commencement ceremony, 34 American Indian students were awarded master, bachelor and associate degrees, the highest number in the University’s history.

Fall 2013 enrollment statistics:

  • More than 1,200 students are taking BHSU courses at the University Center-Rapid City as the University continues to expand its course offerings to meet the needs of students in the state’s second-largest city. The leading institution at the UC-RC, BHSU now offers more than 20 degree programs at the Center.
  • Internet courses continue to show steady growth, climbing to 1,474 students enrolled in Internet courses through BHSU. Many students take online courses as a supplement to their face-to-face course schedules in Spearfish or at the UC-RC.
  • American Indians currently make up more than six percent of the BHSU student body.
