A hands-on workshop, “Create a Website with WordPress,” will be held Thursday, March 7 at the University Center-Rapid City, room 103. The workshop is divided into two sessions. The morning session will be from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., and the afternoon session will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
The SD Center for Enterprise Opportunity (SD CEO), located on the campus of Black Hills State University, has partnered with Chicken Creek Communications to bring this workshop to the University Center.
Dee Sleep, owner of Chicken Creek Communications, says “For about $100 a year, you can create and publish a professional website using the user-friendly web software WordPress.” Sleep has operated the Chicken Creek Communications graphic design, marketing and publishing company in Spearfish for the past 10 years. Sleep is finishing her master’s degree in journalism and has taught mass communication courses for Black Hills State University and South Dakota State University.
The morning session will give participants an overview of how websites work. Topics to be covered include how to select and secure a domain name, how to choose a hosting provider, how to transfer files for online access, how to organize your site, an overview of graphic file formats and resolutions, how search engines find websites, how to track site visitors, a glimpse at HTML and CSS, and more.
The afternoon session will provide information on the framework of WordPress. Topics to be covered include an overview of WordPress functions including the difference between Wordpress.com and WordPress.org, how to navigate the dashboard, how to use WordPress to publish a static website and/or a blog, how to select a theme, how to upload images, and more.
“This seminar is ideal for those who want to create or take control of their own website,” says Sleep. Participants can attend one or both sessions. Cost of each session is $59.
