BHSU Announces Young Performers Competition winners

Winners have been announced for the 13th Annual Young Performers Competition, hosted by the Black Hills Summer Institute of the Arts held at Black Hills State University. Winners have been announced for the 13th Annual Young Performers Competition, hosted by the Black Hills Summer Institute of the Arts held at Black Hills State University.

Sandra Shaefer from Rapid City earned first place for her piano performance of Claude Dubussy’s, Clair de lune, in the student category. Kayla Blickensderfer from Rapid City won second place for her soprano selection of Cuore Che Reprime by Barbara Strozzi, and Sedona Kemp from Deadwood took third place for her soprano performance, Stizzoso, by Pergolesi, also in the student category.

Madison Wieczorek from Piedmont won first place on piano with Aaron Copland’s The Cat and the Mouse, and Savannah Huntley from Rapid City took second place on piano with her selection from Wedding Day at Troldhaugen by Edward Grieg, in the young adult category.

Participants were divided into two categories: students ages 9-14, and young adults ages 15-20. Entrants were required to perform one difficult memorized classical selection and were judged on poise, stage presence, and musicianship.

The competition judges were Dr. Johanna Meier, retired international star of opera and founder of the Johanna Meier Opera Institute; Elizabeth Hastings, music director of the historic Liederkranz Foundation in New York City; Charis Dimaris, renowned Greek pianist from New York; and Stephen Parker, BHSU professor emeritus, served as master of ceremonies.

The Young Performers Competition is part of the Johanna Meier Opera Theatre Institute at BHSU, which is in its 14th year.

Other upcoming opera events include:

June 16 - Aria Recital Evening:
  Students of the Johanna Meier Opera Theatre Institute will present a selection of vocal pieces. The recital will be held in the Meier Recital Hall (BHSU campus) at 7:30 p.m. The free event is open to the public; scholarship donations are welcome.

June 22 - An Evening of Opera Scenes:  This recital will present a selection of opera scenes and arias that will enchant the audience. The event will be held in the Meier Recital Hall (BHSU campus) at 7:30 p.m. A pre-performance lecture will start at 7 p.m. in Meier Hall. Ticket prices are $15 for general admission, $10 for children under 12, students, and seniors over 65.

June 23 - A Night at the Opera:  The performance will be held in Meier Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m.  Ticket prices are $15 for general admission, $10 for children under 12, students, and seniors over 65.  There will be a catered pre-performance dinner at 5:30 p.m. in Meier Hall for those who would like to have an elegant meal prior to the performance. The cost for the dinner and opera is $30 for general admission, $25 for children under 12, students, and seniors over 65. Reservations must be made by June 19. A pre-performance lecture will start at 7 p.m. in Meier Recital Hall.  There will be a free reception with the artists, which is open to everyone who attending the performance.
