Elva Newman, University Mail Services, received the spring 2007 Outstanding CSA Employee Award at Black Hills State University. Newman was recognized for her friendliness and helpfulness as well as her dedication to her job duties and her involvement on campus.

The Black Hills State University Career Service Act (CSA) Council recently announced the selection of the CSA Outstanding Employees for the fall 2006 and spring 2007 semesters. Shad Hunt, Facilities Services, was named CSA Outstanding Employee for fall 2006, and Elva Newman, University Mail Services, was named CSA Outstanding Employee for spring 2007.

Hunt, who was nominated by Jeanne Hanson, program assistant for Facilities Services, services and maintains the equipment that provides the campus’s day-to-day comfort and goes to places on campus most people have never been and never know about until something requires fixing.

According to Hanson, Hunt puts the customer first—whether that customer is a student, faculty, or staff member. She adds, “He is truly an unsung hero.”

Newman was nominated by retiree Gloria Spitler who cited her friendliness and helpfulness as well as the fact that she “gets the mail out in a timely manner, no matter what the weather.” Spitler also stated that Newman “knows all phases of her job,” and if she doesn’t know the answer, “she will try to find it.” She also listed Newman’s support of campus organizations and fundraisers as evidence of how she works as a member of the campus team.

The CSA Council established the Outstanding Employee Awards in 2003-2004 to honor outstanding CSA employees at BHSU. Outstanding employees are recognized for their excellent customer service, attitude, dependable and responsible performance, communication skills, and dedication to working as a member of the BHSU team. Employees can be nominated by anyone on campus or in the Black Hills community. The Outstanding Employees are then chosen by the CSA Council.

Past recipients include Deatta Chapel, Bill Bland, Diane Bishop, Becky Bruce, Bill Baker, and Kay Kerney.

Elected by and representing CSA employees at BHSU are CSA Council members Nancy Shuck, president; Ron Reede, vice president; Chris Coolidge, secretary; Cindy Ostert, treasurer; Debbie Balding, DeeAnn Dorfschmidt, and Myron Sullivan. Other members of this year’s Outstanding Employee selection committee were Marc Jolley, Eileen Thomas, and Rhonda Wolff whose terms on the CSA Council ended this spring.
