Fall session of the South Dakota Stock Market Game to begin October 3

Teachers are invited to register for the Fall 2011 Session of the South Dakota Stock Market Game Program (SDSMG), hosted by Black Hills State University. The fall program begins Monday, Oct. 3 and ends its 10 week trading period on Friday, Dec. 9.

The SDSMG is a real-time online stock market simulation where teams of students research and purchase a portfolio of stocks and compete for prizes in the middle school, high school and college divisions. According to Don Altmyer, professor of accounting at BHSU, students participating learn more effectively as they see how their classroom lessons apply to the real world. Teachers have found the program boosts student motivation and attendance.

The South Dakota Board of Education has mandated an economics or personal finance course as a high school graduation requirement and the SDSMG program provides teachers with lesson plans by subject and grade level that correlate to national content standards in economics and personal finance. The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) a federal agency commonly referred to as the “nation’s report card,” defined Economic Literacy and studied Economic content at high schools nationwide. The NAEP report found that students who played the Stock Market Game outperformed the Economic Literacy national averages in every category including gender, ethnicity and Title 1.
