Black Hills State University President Kay Schallenkamp met with U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan at the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) Annual Meeting in San Antonio, Texas, Nov. 24.
Schallenkamp is a former member of the board of directors for AASCU, an association that includes 430 public college and university members from the United States, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. AASCU promotes appreciation and support for public higher education and the distinctive contributions of member colleges and universities; analyzes public policy and advocates for member institutions and the students they serve; provides policy leadership and program support to strengthen academic quality, promotes access and inclusion, and facilitates educational innovation; and creates professional development opportunities for institutional leaders and their spouses.
Duncan has recognized BHSU for its dynamic and effective teacher preparation programs. During a recent speech at Columbia University Duncan singled out the BHSU program Project PRIME (Promoting Reflective Inquiry in Mathematics Education) as an example of a high-quality, innovative program that seeks to improve mathematics instruction within the Rapid City School District and to reduce the achievement gap between American Indian and non-American Indian students. Project PRIME is a unique and innovative partnership of the BHSU Center for Advancement in Math & Science Education (CAMSE), Rapid City area schools, and TIE (Technology in Education), a regional educational service agency in western South Dakota.
