Black Hills State University recently hosted Careers with Impact, where students preparing for careers in human services, psychology and sociology had the opportunity to network with employers, graduate schools and organizations associated with those fields.
More than 100 students attended the event and had the chance to visit with professionals about internship opportunities and seek advice in their career fields. “Students felt much better about their majors and were excited to have the opportunity to visit with professionals within their major,” notes Arlene Holmes, director of the Career Center at BHSU. Students who attended indicated a greater awareness job possibilities and graduate schools within the area. Additionally, students were provided a chance to practice networking, an essential tool in a job search.
Careers with Impact was conceived through collaboration between Dr. James Awbrey, assistant professor of history and social sciences and the BHSU Career Center.
Members of the Public Relations Student Society of America student organization assisted in hosting the event by introducing students to the professionals and helping to get conversations started.
