BHSU concert band and Rapid City musicians will host benefit concert for Honor Flight

The Black Hills State University concert band will be teaming up with musicians from Rapid City Oct. 17 and 18 to play benefit concerts for Honor Flight South Dakota.

Performances will be Saturday, Oct. 17, in the Rapid City Stevens High School Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. and in Spearfish on Sunday, Oct. 18, in the Clare and Josef Meier Recital Hall at 2:30 p.m. Admission is free and all donations collected will go to help World War II veterans visit their memorial in Washington, D.C.

“I wanted to do something to honor our veterans. It seemed like a natural thing for our band to perform patriotic music and music from the 1940s as a way of raising money,” says Christopher Hahn, BHSU music instructor. Hahn hopes that area residents will show support for veterans and come to the concerts to enjoy great music and donate to this worthwhile cause.

According to the South Dakota Honor Flight website, the Honor Flight concept was established four years ago with a goal of providing a free trip for WWII Veterans to see their national memorial in Washington, D.C. The national WWII memorial was completed and dedicated in 2004, at a time when most surviving veterans from the era were over 80 years old and were not likely to have the means or support to travel to the memorial on their own. Building on the experiences of other flights, South Dakota is the 30th state launch an Honor Flight project. Over 235 veterans have made the trip and there are still over 600 who have applied to be on an Honor Flight.

Honor Flight South Dakota will continue to raise funds for more flights. The trip is a charter direct to Washington, D.C. for a two-day visit to the WWII memorial, Arlington National Cemetery, and other sites honoring service men and women.

Any instrumentalists who would like to join the band should contact the band’s director, at 605-642-6888 or Christopher.Hahn@bhsu.edu.
