South Dakota high school students will have the opportunity to explore health career options at Black Hills State University during the 2009 Scrubs Camp Oct. 10.
Scrub Camps are a one-day learning experience conducted at nine locations throughout the state. Campers will hear from healthcare professionals who will discuss what they do and how they got into their chosen career field. They will also be able to participate in exciting hands-on activities and receive personalized career guidance plans.
Scrubs Camps are designed for 9th through 12th grade high school students with an interest in the healthcare field. There is no charge to attend, lunch is provided and students will also receive a scrubs shirt. Parents are also welcome to attend the Scrubs Camp with their participating student.
The purpose of the Scrubs Camps is to encourage students in South Dakota to consider pursuing a career in healthcare within their home state. One of the most pressing issues facing the industry today is the critical need for healthcare providers. This is especially true for South Dakota. Between the years 2006 and 2016, there is a projected increase in healthcare workers needed in South Dakota of over 25 percent. The state is also facing a 17 percent decrease in the number of high school graduates between 2002 and 2018.
The Scrubs Camps are made possible through the collaborative effort of the South Dakota Department of Education Office of Curriculum, Career and Technical Education and South Dakota Department of Health Office of Rural Health.
