Nineteen Black Hills State University theatre students are currently participating in the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (ACTF) in Lawrence, Kan.

Being a part of the regional festival gives students the chance to learn more of their future professions through experience and have an opportunity to compete for the Irene Ryan Scholarship.

Michael Boring, senior speech communications and history major from Pierre; and Phil Braun, junior speech communications major from Gregory, were nominated for the Irene Ryan Scholarship Award for their performances in the BHSU production of A Christmas Carol.

Casey Hibbert, senior speech communications major from Spearfish; and Michael Hollinger, 2008 speech communications graduate from Ashland, Neb., were nominated for their roles in last year’s performance of Much Ado About Nothing.

In addition, Debra Iverson, senior speech communications major from Bowman, N.D., received a Barbizon Design Award nomination for her costume design of A Christmas Carol.

Boring, Braun, Hibbert and Hollinger will participate in the Irene Ryan Scholarship Competition. They will perform excerpts from two plays with their scene partners: Jessica Juhrend, sophomore speech communications major from Spearfish; Josh Wadhams, freshman composite business major from Brookings; and Tessa Krog, junior speech communications major from Spearfish.
