BHSU to host 10th anniversary gala: Celebration of the Arts

Black Hills State University will host the 10th Anniversary Gala: Celebration of the Arts in the Clare and Josef Meier Recital Hall Saturday, June 14 at 7:30 p.m.  The gala is a delightful assortment of short selections from areas of the arts including: music, dance, and literature.

The program features performances by winners of the Young Performers Competition. In addition, excerpts from Lehar’s The Merry Widow will be sung by Heidi Ames and Adam Strube and selections from  The Carnival of the Animals will be performed by members of the Spearfish Duet Club. Breanna Meyers will read selections from The Belle of Amherst, and dancers from the Black Hills Dance Center will perform a modern dance. A formal reception will follow the performance; cocktail or business attire is requested. Tickets will be sold at the door for $10 adults, $5 children under 18.

The gala is the opening event for the Johanna Meier Opera Theater Institute, a two- week workshop for advanced singers from across the United States. Johanna Meier is an internationally renowned opera singer, best known for her roles in Wagner operas. Since her retirement, she has been committed to enhancing the education of career-oriented musicians whose goal is to perform on stage. She offers her experience to help student’s reach their goals, and many of her professional colleagues in the opera world come to join her in this endeavor as faculty and staff members.

The participants for the Opera Theater Institute, who are selected by special auditions, participate in masters classes, staging sessions, individual coaching sessions, body movement classes, and career advising sessions. The workshop culminates in performances of opera scenes, staged and coached by directors from major national opera companies.

Opera performances will be Friday, June 27 in Meier Hall and Saturday, June 28 in the Woodburn Auditorium, both performances are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Admission for Friday night’s performance is $10 for the general public and $5 for children under 18. Saturday night is $12 for the general public and $10 for children under 18. Tickets will be available at the door. Johanna Meier will be giving a pre-opera lecture before both performances at 7 p.m. There is also a dinner scheduled for Saturday, June 28 at 5:30 p.m. in the Meier Hall Atrium. Dinner tickets are $15 and reservations must be made in advance. For reservations call the BHSU College of Arts and Sciences at 642-6420.
