BHSU students earn degrees during 2018 spring commencement ceremony

Nearly 390 Black Hills State University candidates for graduation were awarded master, bachelor, associate degrees during the University’s 175th Commencement Ceremony this month.

All graduates are listed in the Spring 2018 Graduation List by hometown or current residence. Degrees are indicated by the following: MBA, master of business administration; MED, master of education; MS, master of science; BA, bachelor of arts; BGS, bachelor of general studies; BS, bachelor of science; BSED, bachelor of science in education; AA, associate of arts; and AS, associate of science.

Bachelor degree candidates who graduated with honors are noted by the following designations: Cum Laude, grade point average (GPA) 3.5 to 3.699; Magna Cum Laude, GPA of 3.7 to 3.899; and Summa Cum Laude, GPA of 3.9 or higher. Associate degree candidates who graduated with honors are noted by the following designations: With Honor, GPA of 3.5 to 3.699; with High Honor, GPA of 3.7 to 3.899; and with Highest Honor, GPA of 3.9 or higher.

Candidates graduating from the University Honors Program are noted by the following designations: Research Scholar, focusing on undergraduate research and creative scholarship; University Scholar, a four-year comprehensive Honors program with an emphasis on undergraduate research and creative scholarship; and International University Scholar, which requires a significant international experience in addition to the full Honors curriculum.

Premier Event for “Not Here, Not Anywhere” sexual violence elimination campaign to be held Oct. 12 during BHSU vs. Mines Battle for the Homestake Trophy

 For the past three years, a new tradition “Not Here, Not Anywhere” has been associated with the historic Battle for the Homestake Trophy. Teal-colored awareness ribbons signifying a unified stance against sexual violence and support for victims will adorn fans, players and coaches at the Oct. 12 Black Hills State University football (vs. South Dakota School of Mines & Technology) and volleyball (vs. Chadron State) games. The Oct. 12 “Not Here, Not Anywhere” Premier Event also includes a special half-time presidential presentation.

Alum reflects on “Keep New Zealand Beautiful” research experience

Visiting the country of New Zealand was at the top of Cole Hemmah’s bucket list. Just months after graduating from Black Hills State University, Cole was offered a rare opportunity to live and work in the country known for its diverse natural beauty. Originally from Sturgis, Cole graduated from BHSU in 2018 with a degree in outdoor education. He was working in Grand Junction, Colo., as a tutor when a fellow backpacking guide reached out to him with a job offer.

“Lions and tigers and Sting?” The Black Hills State University 2019 Swarm Week will be held Sept. 22-28 with the theme, “There’s No Place Like Homecoming,” inspired by the Wizard of Oz. Each year, BHSU students and the community come together to celebrate tradition and school spirit over a week of activities including the parade and homecoming football game.
