The Black Hills State University Debate Team recently returned from Spokane, Wash., where they represented BHSU at the International Public Debate Association National Tournament. It was the fourth-straight year that a BHSU student broke out of preliminary rounds to tournament out rounds.
 

Dust off your bicycles, Black Hills residents! Black Hills State University and Bike Spearfish! are coordinating Bike Month events throughout the month of May for all ages. Elementary and middle school students are invited to join the “Bike Train” to and from school on Fridays, May 4, 11, and 18. To sign up, parents and guardians are asked to fill out the google form found at http://facebook.com/bikespearfish by April 30.

In the final faculty-lead Geek Speak of the spring semester, Berberick will present “From Bach to Braindrill: Exploring the similarities between Metal and Classical music and fandom.” In this lecture, Berberick will give metal music the academic attention and reflection he believes the genre deserves. The presentation will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 26 in Jonas 110. All Geek Speaks are free and open to the public.

Combine a semester of landscape photography study with seven days of intense field work in southern Utah, and the result is a compelling new exhibit at Black Hills State University. Join photography students, Mason Moir of Rapid City, Madison Hand of Midland, and Bryce Boser of Box Elder, for an opening reception of their exhibit “Adventures In The Waterpocket Fold” Thursday, April, 26 from 4-6 p.m. in the Upper Photographers’ Gallery in Jonas Hall.

Join Black Hills State University photography students April 26 from 4-6 p.m. for an opening reception of “Unparalleled,” an exhibition of over 100 photographs taken by BHSU students enrolled in the Contemporary Issues in Photography course this spring.

The descendants of Thor and Gjertina (Olson) Fosheim were honored with the 2018 Legacy Family Award from Black Hills State University.

In his Geek Speak, “Artificial vs. Human Intelligence: The Coming Conflict over the Definition of Rationality,” Dr. Max Marc, associate professor of management information systems at Black Hills State University, will discuss the looming ethical problems the human race will be confronted with as artificial intelligence advances. Black Hills State University honored faculty and staff members during the Employee Recognition Reception held recently. Awards were given for outstanding service and milestone years of service. More than 70 recipients were honored for nearly 1,000 years of service to BHSU.

The Life Sciences building on the campus of Black Hills State University will be renamed in honor of Dr. Kathryn Johnson, a BHSU graduate who is owner and principal of Johnson Environmental Concepts in Rapid City. A gathering to celebrate the renaming will be held Tuesday, April 24 at 9 a.m. on the northeast side of the building.
 

Internationally-recognized fashion and portrait photographer and Canon Explorer of Light, Douglas Kirkland will give a free public lecture on the Black Hills State University campus in Spearfish. The lecture will take place in Meier Recital Hall Wednesday, April 18 from 7 to 9 p.m. A recognized Canon Explorer of Light and giant of the fashion, movie and portrait photography world, Kirkland has lectured on photography and exhibited his images worldwide. He is best known for his celebrity portraits but the scope of his work is far wider.

The Rapid City region now has access to a two-year MBA program offered at Black Hills State University – Rapid City. The MBA, which has been available at BHSU-RC through the BHSU School of Business since 2010, was recently streamlined and is now a two-year, Master of Business Administration (MBA) Program in Applied Management effective now.

Note: this event has been postponed until September 21, 2018. Celebrated philosopher Dr. Martha C. Nussbaum warns that anger can disfigure modern democracies. Nussbaum will present “Anger, Powerlessness, and the Politics of Blame” Friday, April 13 at 7 p.m. in Meier Hall on the Black Hills State University campus in Spearfish. The event is free and open to the public as part of the Madeline Young Speaker Series at BHSU.

Black Hills State University honored 12 retiring faculty and staff members during the Employee Recognition Reception held on campus recently. Altogether, this year’s retirees gave approximately 185 years of service to the University.
 

Music is a powerful tool societies use to express their culture. Two professors at Black Hills State University are exploring how it can also be used to track cultural changes through time.

In their Geek Speak, “Rebel Girl: Celebrating a Century of Exchange between American Popular Music and Feminism,” Dr. Laura Colmenero-Chilberg, professor of sociology, and Dr. Dan May, assistant professor of mathematics, will discuss the intersection between feminism in the U.S. and American popular music. The presentation will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 12 in Jonas 110. All Geek Speaks are free and open to the public.
