The Black Hills State University Jacket Ride is just around the corner. In preparation for the third annual event, held during the 75th annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, BHSU helped set up nearly 1,000 American flags at the Legendary Buffalo Chip.

The Legendary Buffalo Chip sets up the Field of Flags each year to honor veterans and welcome riders to the Rally. Dr. Rod Custer, provost and vice president of academic affairs Kanda Guthmiller, scholarship coordinator Corinne Hansen, director of university and community relations and Gail DiSabatino, Presidential Fellow, helped install the flags.

"It&rsquos a community effort and we love to have everyone a part of it," said Nyla Griffith, public relations director at the Legendary Buffalo Chip.

The Field of Flags display will be left up through the Rally, which runs Aug. 3-9.

The BHSU Jacket Ride is Tuesday, Aug. 4. The annual community event is a fundraiser for the BHSU Jacket Ride Scholarship, which awards scholarships to student veterans.

This year&rsquos ride will take bikers through Western South Dakota and Eastern Wyoming before ending at the Buffalo Chip Campground, where there will be lunch, live music and other events.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. in the Donald E. Young Sports &amp Fitness Center parking lot on the BHSU campus, with the ride beginning at 10 a.m. The cost is $50 for a single rider $75 for a rider and a passenger. Registration can be completed online at www.BHSU.edu/JacketRide. Registration includes lunch and a t-shirt.

The BHSU Jacket Ride is an excellent program, said Griffith, and one that is near and dear to her heart. Her youngest son, Travis Floyd, human services and psychology major, is a student veteran at BHSU.

"BHSU does a wonderful job of taking care of their student veterans," she said.

Last year, the Jacket Ride provided four scholarships to BHSU student veterans.

For more information on the Jacket Ride, contact Steve Meeker at (605) 642-6228. The University Advancement Office will be at Downtown Friday Nights in Spearfish on Friday, July 24 talking about the event. BHSU will also have a booth at the Crossroads near the Legendary Buffalo Chip during Rally Week, offering more information on the University.
