The grand opening for the Black Hills State University Joy (Proctor) Krautschun Alumni/Foundation Center is from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5, with the dedication ceremony scheduled for 4 p.m. in the new center at 1531 St. Joseph St. in Spearfish, south of Lyle Hare Stadium and Ida Henton Park on the BHSU campus. The event is open to the public and the community is invited to attend.  Entertainment will be provided by the Green Dolphin Jazz Trio.

"This is a home for alumni when they return to campus, a welcome center for prospective students and a facility that can and will be used by the community for special events," Meeker added.

The Joy (Proctor) Krautschun Alumni/Foundation Center is a 5,800 square-foot building that will house the University Advancement offices and offer a gathering space before BHSU athletic events, concerts and other activities. The center also can be used for business meetings and receptions.

The new center is named for Joy (Proctor) Krautschun, a BHSU alumna and longtime supporter of the University. Krautschun was a 1973 BHSU graduate and during her time at BHSU, she was instrumental in implementing and coaching the University's first varsity women's basketball team. She passed away in early November 2013.

During her time at BHSU, Krautschun was a member of the BHSU homecoming royalty, a cheerleader and involved in the dance program and intramural sports. She served for many years on the BHSU Alumni Association board and in 2007 she received the Special Service Award. In 2009, she and her husband, Harvey, were the Swarm Days parade grand marshals.
