Black Hills State University will celebrate its first annual Global Entrepreneurship Week in Spearfish and at the University Center - Rapid City Nov. 17-20.  Students and the community are welcome to attend classes featuring prominent area entrepreneurs and a social event featuring a business idea pitch competition.

Black Hills State University will celebrate its first annual Global Entrepreneurship Week Nov. 17-20 providing opportunities for students and the Black Hills community to engage with successful regional entrepreneurs.

Dr. Jeffrey Wehrung, director of the BHSU Center for Business, Entrepreneurship, & Tourism (CBET), said the week is a global celebration of entrepreneurship as a potential career path.

"I wanted to expose both business and non-business students to entrepreneurship and bring entrepreneurs to campus to interact with our students," said Wehrung.

Wehrung, also assistant professor of management, said entrepreneurs will visit classrooms in Spearfish and at the University Center-Rapid City throughout the week as guest speakers on topics including starting a business on the web, starting a business at low-cost, and finding new business opportunities.

"All the classes will have open seats for students and community members to join if they want to hear from a specific entrepreneur," said Wehrung.

Entrepreneurs will also be available for informal discussions during lunch at the Hive, the on-campus dining service in the David B. Miller YellowJacket Student Union from 11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. during the Taste of Entrepreneurship event.

Maria Mraz, a business administration student from Dupree, helped plan the week's events using the skills she learned in her Hospitality and Tourism course at BHSU.

"I'm most excited to see students partake in the Mocktail Party at the end of the week," said Mraz.  "The event will give students insight in to what it takes to be an entrepreneur and they'll have the opportunity to network and share their business ideas."

The Mocktail Party Pitch Competition concludes the week on Thursday, Nov. 20 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. in the Student Union's Club Buzz room.  Live music will be provided by Woody Earwood sponsored by Ginger Gray entertainment.

"The party will be an informal time for students to socialize with entrepreneurs," said Wehrung.  "At the event, students can pitch their business ideas to as many people as possible.  Secret judges will award prizes to the top three pitches of the evening."
