Desy Schoenewies, assistant professor of art at BHSU, had artwork accepted into a national juried exhibition.

Her painting "Passing Through" was one of nearly 60 pieces of artwork selected for The Washington Pavilion Juried Exhibition, which is currently on display at the Washington Pavilion in Sioux Falls. The painting received an Honorable Mention award.

"I&rsquove been working on a series of what I call South Dakota Landscapes," Schoenewies said. "They remind me of moving here as an outsider and include bits and pieces about the culture of South Dakota that I&rsquove been picking up on. I&rsquom trying to tell the stories about the people who live here and the land itself."

Schoenewies is from St. Louis, Mo., but lived in San Francisco for several years prior to moving to Spearfish.

"Passing Through" is the image of a biker that Schoenewies met during the 2013 Sturgis Rally.

"When I photographed this individual and he just threw himself in this proud pose. I loved it. He&rsquos such a character," Schoenewies said. "People who have seen the painting actually recognized him during this year&rsquos bike week."

Schoenewies teaches drawing, painting and art methods classes at BHSU.

"I&rsquove been scribbling since a crayon could fit into my hand," Schoenewies said. "Art&rsquos been my entire life. Everything I&rsquove ever known and loved has been surrounded by art."

The exhibition closes Oct. 4. A special reception will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. that evening in Sioux Falls. Schoenewies will be in attendance to discuss her artwork with attendees.
