Black Hills State University Music Department Announces Spring Performances

SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Black Hills State University Music Department has been hard at work preparing for their upcoming spring performances which will feature the University’s vocal and instrumental ensembles. Performances will take place in Meier Recital Hall on the BHSU campus.

On Sunday, April 10 at 2 p.m., the Concert Choir and Chamber Singers, under the direction of Dr. Jonathan Nero, professor of music at BHSU, will perform a collection of works from various time periods spanning the renaissance to more recent material. They will also sing a tribute piece to Ukraine. The Jazz Ensemble, led by David Martinson, music instructor at BHSU, will perform on April 21 at 7 p.m. followed by the Jazz Quintet on April 22 at 7 p.m. The Dakota Chamber Orchestra Concert will finish out the week on Saturday, April 23 at 7 p.m. This group is directed by Dr. Skye Van Duuren, assistant professor of music at BHSU.

On Sunday, April 24 at 2 p.m., the BHSU Band will perform their Spring Works under the direction of Dr. David Berberick, associate professor of music and director of bands at BHSU.

All concerts are free to attend. Donations are suggested and funds received go towards music department scholarships.

The final performance of the year will be the Spring Music Festival on Saturday, April 30 at 10:30 am. This event will take place on the Campus Green and include performances from local schools, community music groups, the BHSU music department, and a special performance from headlining band Camp Comfort. Berberick described the afternoon as a celebration full of fun, food trucks, games, a silent auction, and lots of music.

“The spring concerts and music festival I believe will highlight how much the groups have grown since the end of the pandemic and will showcase students who genuinely enjoy and take pride in their performance,” Berberick said.

In case of bad weather, the Spring Music Festival will move inside to Meier Hall with food vendors and clubs setting up in the lobby.
