DR. JIM MORRIS SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT FUND CREATED AT BHSU

The Black Hills State University Foundation received a gift, given by Sue Morris on behalf of her late husband, to establish the Dr. Jim Morris Scholarship.

Jim Morris began his teaching career at Black Hills Teachers College as an associate professor in business education in 1957 and was later promoted to professor of business and taught graduate courses before leaving BH in 1967. Dr. Morris had a reputation of being a fanatic in economics class.

Prior to BHTC, Dr. Morris taught at the University of North Dakota where he received a Master of Arts in business administration. His undergraduate work was completed at Northern State Teachers College. Photography and gardening were the favorite diversions of Dr. Morris. He was a member of Pi Kappa Delta and Kappa Delta Pi, and his preferred quote was “If you are not confused, you are not well informed.”

“We are so pleased by Sue’s generosity to establish a scholarship in memory of Dr. Morris,” Vice President of Institutional Advancement Steve Meeker said. “He dedicated 10 years of his life teaching BH business students and touched many of their lives during this period of time.”

The recipients of the Dr. Jim Morris Scholarship will be selected each year by Black Hills State University. Recipients must be a full-time student at BHSU, possess a GPA between 2.0 and 3.0 as a freshman (first-year) student, and the award may be renewable each year for four years if the student maintains a GPA of 2.5 or better on a 4.0 scale.

Preference will be given to students that show financial need, are working to help pay tuition costs and are ranked mid-range on their academic transcripts or ACT/SAT scores. This scholarship is intended to help students that are working to become better students; students ranked at the top of their class are not eligible.

The first award of $10,000 will be awarded to a student in Fall 2022.
