Red Shirt Cultural Holiday Exchange kicks off at BHSU

In December BHSU students, faculty and staff will visit Red Shirt School, located south of Hermosa, for the 16th Annual Red Shirt Cultural Holiday Exchange to deliver presents and spend the day with students. The community is invited to participate in the exchange by visiting one of the Angel Trees located in the David B. Miller Yellow Jacket Student Union and the E.Y. Berry Library on the BHSU campus and donating a gift.

The 16th Annual Red Shirt Cultural Holiday Exchange at Black Hills State University is currently underway. Angel tree gifts are available on trees located in the David B. Miller Yellow Jacket Student Union and the E.Y. Berry Library on the BHSU campus.

BHSU and Spearfish community members are encouraged to take an angel and place the unwrapped gift near the tree. Donors can also make monetary donations including new clothing, games, books or school supplies.

The drop off deadline is Monday, November 28th. Drop off sites include the Student Union, Library and Center for American Indian Studies in Jonas Hall, room 101, on the BHSU campus.

In early December, BHSU students, faculty and staff will wrap the presents and spend the day in the Red Shirt classrooms, handing out the gifts by Santa Claus.

A holiday community service tradition for the last 16 years, the Red Shirt Cultural Holiday Exchange began as a BHSU class project. The event is now co-sponsored by a number of campus groups including Lakota Omniciye, the Center for American Indian Studies, AISES, the University Multicultural Committee, BHSU alumni and the Spearfish community.
