Three Black Hills State University student organizations were recognized during the December South Dakota Board of Regents meeting held at BHSU recently.

The following organizations were recognized for their outstanding academic, community and organizational work.

Award for Academic Excellence-The BHSU Art Club

The BHSU Art Club creates a community of artists and people who appreciate art to benefit the greater Spearfish community through visual arts and benevolent projects. The club's goal is to contribute to the quality of student life and the academic community through collaborative efforts involving student leaders, student organizations and community groups.

Award for Community Service-The University Programming Team (UP Team)

The BHSU University Programming Team (UP Team) plans large events for the BHSU campus and surrounding community. Its student volunteers, both plan and host a variety of events including lectures, musical and cultural events, dances and large-scale activities. The group participates in all the community service opportunities the campus sponsors such as Spearfish Clean-Up and Make a Difference Day. The group also has raised money for cancer awareness and other local charities. In the past year, the group held a Dancing with the Staff event, which raised proceeds for the Ranchers Relief Fund to assist with recovery efforts for Storm Atlas in 2013. This year, the UP Team will strive to increase student activities and attendance, recruit new members and collaborate with other programs and schools to include more programs.

Award for Organizational Leadership-The International Student Organization

The BHSU International Student Organization (ISO) serves as a cultural exchange, establishing links between international and domestic students at BHSU. ISO provides opportunities to learn new languages, try new foods and study abroad. The group encourages an exchange of cultural knowledge between students and community members as well as the opportunity to create new friendships with students from all over the world.
