Smooth jazz and century-old music are part of the upcoming Black Hills State University music concerts.
The BHSU jazz ensemble will perform Thursday, Nov. 12, at 7:30 p.m. and the Dakota Chamber Orchestra will perform on Sunday Nov. 15, 2:30 p.m. Both events will take place in the Clare & Josef Meier Hall on the BHSU campus and are free and open for the public.
"Going to a live concert, you never know what is going to happen, so there is a spark of excitement," said Dr. Chris Hahn, assistant professor of music at BHSU and director of performing music groups. "Great music can give you things to talk about. The Jazz concert will be relaxing and the Dakota Chamber Orchestra has more depth to its music," said Hahn.
The jazz ensemble is comprised of 11 members and will perform standard jazz music like "Doxy" by Miles Davis, "St. Thomas" by Sonny Rollins, "Yardbird Suite" by Charlie Parker, "Blues for a Purpose" by Tom Kubis and others.
The Dakota Chamber Orchestra is a string orchestra that began performing 16 years ago. It's a mix of students and community members having 17 musicians. According to Hahn, the orchestra will perform a wide variety of music from the 18th to 20th centuries, including "Don Quixote Suite" by G. P. Telemann, "Holberg Suite" by Edvard Grieg and "Concerto Grosso" by Ernest Bloch.
Also Dr. Symeon Waseen, assistant professor of music at BHSU, will accompany the group on the piano and harpsichord.
"We encourage you to support the students and community, and listen as they show what they have accomplished," Hahn said
All events will be held in the Clare and Josef Meier Recital Hall on the BHSU campus unless otherwise noted. Check the BHSU calendar at www.BHSU.edu/Events to confirm concert dates and times.
