What us NSO?

NSO stands for New Student Orientation.

Is Orientation required?

New Student Orientation is require for all new freshman and transfer students with less than 30 credit hours must attend a virtual Orientation session at BHSU.

I am a freshman with dual credit courses. Do I still need to sign up for a virtual Orientation?

Yes. NSO is required for all freshman with or without college credits. (Dual Credit)

How do I know if I have less than or more than 30 transfer credits?

Contact the Admissions Office at 605.642.6343 or Admissions@bhsu.edu to talk about your credit hours.

How do I register for classes if I am a readmit or transfer students with more than 30 credit hours?

All readmit and transfer students with more than 30 credit hours will fill out a registration request form. Once completed, the Registrars Office will contact you to schedule a registration appointment with your advisor.

What is Orientation?

NSO will allow you to meet other Future Yellow Jackets, learn about the campus services as well as prepare you to register for classes. You are going to gain a lot from this experience and leave prepared for the academic and social opportunities that await you next semester.

Why is attendance at Orientation required?

NSO is designed to make your transition to college smooth and seamless as possible. The virtual Orientation is an important step to register for courses. Attending an Orientation will allow us make sure you're talking with people that are best suited to assist you in putting your class schedule together.

Will I register for classes at Orientation?

No, you will not register for courses at the selected Orientation date. You must complete one of the virtual Orientations prior to your selected registration session. Once your virtual Orientation is completed, you will then meet with your advisor on the second selected registration session to register for courses.

Will I get the classes I need if I attend a later session?

Yes. We enlist the help of professional and academic advisors who are familiar with graduation requirements and major coursework to help our students build a schedule that comprises the classes they need.

What do I need in order to sign up for NSO?

Can parents/guardians/family participate in Orientation?

Absolutely! While parent/guardian participation isn't required, we encourage those that can to do so. We want everyone in the family to feel comfortable with BHSU and have questions and concerns answered.

Is there a cost to attend Orientation?

No. Participation in Orientation is free.

What should I do if I can't participate in any of the scheduled NSO dates?

Please do your best to make arrangements to participate in a Virtual New Student Orientation session. Completion of an Orientation program is required prior to course registration.
