A record number of people attended the Black Hills State University Scholarship Gala recently at the Joy (Proctor) Krautschun Alumni/Foundation Center. More than 235 guests supported BHSU with scholarship funds of $75,000. This figure broke last year’s record of $44,000 raised.

The gala sponsor again this year was First Interstate Bank; Aces and Eights entertained the crowd sponsored by Pioneer Bank and Trust. Guests were also treated to a candy bar sponsored by Quik Signs after eating a wonderful meal served by A’viands.

A’viands received the Difference Maker Award for their $1 million contribution to the BHSU Foundation in 2017.

Carissa Deming, music education major from Newcastle, Wyo., shared with attendees how the support of scholarships has impacted her education.

“Scholarship funds allow me to focus on my academics. The Spearfish community has been an incredible support system for me through my college career,” said Deming. “They’ve reminded me of the value of my college education and encouraged me to persevere.”

Deming’s career goal is to become a board-certified music therapist.

Steve Meeker, Vice President of University Advancement, was very pleased with this year’s gala.

We can’t thank our supporters enough. BHSU still ranks fifth out of six state schools in scholarships, but we continue to make up ground on our competition,” said Meeker. “We very much appreciate all of our sponsors for the event especially First Interstate Bank our title sponsorWe also very much appreciate A’viands and their support and service they provide to make BHSU the great university that it is.”
