Black Hills State University accounting students get the chance to meet with potential employers at the annual Accounting Fair on campus Wednesday, Sept. 25, from 9 – 11 a.m. at the Joy Center. Ten businesses will be in attendance to recruit students.

Assistant professor of accounting at BHSU Laura Prosser says, “Many firms start to look at potential job candidates early in a student’s academic career, so it is important for students to meet with employers and begin to develop a relationship with them.”

“Each year several students secure internships that lead to jobs at those firms through the Accounting Fair. It is not uncommon for our graduate students to have multiple offers of employment. Our BHSU accounting alumni can be found in a wide variety of CPA firms and businesses,” she continues.

This year, students can expect to see several regional accounting firms as well as other employers and government entities including:
  • Ketel Thorstenson,
  • Casey Peterson,
  • Brady, Martz & Associates,
  • Grooms & Harkins,
  • Lenhart, Mason & Associates,
  • MHP,
  • Black Hills Energy,
  • Concord Trust Company,
  • SD Department of Legislative Audit,
  • and Bureau of Finance & Audit.
A CPA review resource representative from Becker CPA Review will also be available.

Prosser says the fair on campus has a unique aspect to it. “We start the event with our ‘accounting jam.’ Each employer is given three minutes to talk about their firm/business on a larger scale with all those in attendance.” The idea is that the employers are able to present to everyone to peak interest for further conversation later on.

The BHSU Accounting Fair gives students the opportunity to introduce themselves in the workforce before they graduate. Developing relationships and building their network of connections proves, time and time again, beneficial when seeking employment.

Dana Weber, retention and recruitment specialist for the College of Business and Natural Sciences at BHSU, states that last year the event had a “stellar attendance” with over 100 accounting students participating.

One of the big highlights of the event actually occurs before the fair. Students have the opportunity to get their resumes reviewed and participate in mock interviews prepping and encouraging them for the real deal. Students seeking review or interview practice should contact the Spearfish or Rapid City campus.
