Associate degree in business now offered at BHSU and BHSU-Rapid City

Black Hills State University received approval from the South Dakota Board of Regents today to offer a new associate of science degree in business administration. Students may begin enrolling in the program immediately.

Dr. Chris Crawford, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs, said the new associate degree is available through BHSU in both Spearfish and at BHSU-Rapid City and is in response to strong market demands for business skills. Crawford noted this degree will provide graduates with a background in accounting, economics, and management for use in a variety of business environments.

“With growth in employment for business and financial occupations, the BHSU associates in business responds to a key workforce need in our region,” said Crawford.

The BHSU associate degree in business administration is a total of 60 credits, approximately 20 courses.

Dr. Greg Farley, dean of the College of Business and Natural Sciences at BHSU, said the program draws upon the success of the AACSB-accredited bachelor’s in business and the master’s degree in business administration already offered through BHSU.

“This is a great opportunity for students to efficiently earn an in-demand degree that will prepare them for a number of positions. By design, the credits earned in the associates can also apply towards a bachelor’s degree in business – at BHSU or at other schools throughout the country,” said Farley. “Earn your associates at BHSU and then see what other opportunities are available to you for employment or higher education.”

Farley added that there is a nationwide need for more human resource assistants, accounting technicians, marketing specialists, and management positions. According to the South Dakota Department of Labor, employment projections in marketing are expected to be up 20.1 percent by 2024, with other supervisory and management roles increasing close to 9 percent by 2024.
Courses for the new associate degree in business administration are offered in both Spearfish and Rapid City.
