Alumni, athletic teams to be inducted into Yellow Jacket Hall of Fame

Black Hills State University will induct two teams and six alumni into the Yellow Jacket Hall of Fame during the 2019 Swarm Week homecoming celebration Sept. 22-28.

The recipients will be honored during the Hall of Fame Banquet Friday, Sept. 27 at 6 p.m. in the Jacket Legacy Room of the David B. Miller Yellow Jacket Student Union, BHSU Campus, in Spearfish. Tickets for the banquet must be purchased in advance by contacting the BHSU Alumni Office at 605-642-6385. Seating is limited. Tickets are $30 per person.

The 2019 Yellow Jacket Hall of Fame inductees include:

2003 Men's Cross Country Team
Coached by Scott Walkinshaw, the 2003 Men’s Cross Country Team earned second place at the NAIA National Meet and were Dakota Athletic Conference and Region III Champions. Team members include Brandon Bertram, Ryan Cowger, Jesse Coy, Michael “J.R.” Grabinger, James Hansen, Zach Kintzley, Trent Mack, Mike Nekuda, Dennis Newell, Bo Red Bow, Greg Starr, Andy VanDeest, Dan VanEngen, and Luke Watkins.

2005 Women's Cross Country Team
Coached by Scott Walkinshaw, the 2005 Women’s Cross Country Team earned second place at the NAIA National Meet and were Dakota Athletic Conference and Region III Champions. Team members include Callie Ackerman, Wesleigh (Hardy) Bishop, Jaime (Adams) Bosl, Crystal Hostetter, Kendra (Karst) Mack, Brianne Marron, Jessica Marshall, Kerry (Washburn) Nekuda, Alicia (Verhulst) Porsch, Marissa Rotness, Jamie (Hahn) VanDeest, and Liz Woodruff.

Jaime Bentley, Spearfish, Athlete - Softball, Golf, and Basketball
Jaime Bentley, Class of 2007 & 2011, was a three-sport athlete participating in softball, golf, and basketball. In golf, she finished fourth in the NAIA Region III meet with a score of 170 (10 strokes off the lead) and was honored as the No. 1 female golfer in the Dakota Athletic Conference in 2005-06 and 2006-07. She was also the Most Valuable Senior in the conference in 2007. In basketball, Jaime made five 3-point baskets in one game four different times and made 159 threes over her career. Jaime also coached the golf team from 2008-2017.
 
Lacey Haughian, Miles City, Mont., Athlete – Track and Field and Basketball
Lacey Haughian, Class of 2008, was a two-time All-American - once in track in the outdoor javelin in 2006 and once in basketball in 2008. In basketball, she set BHSU records in field goal shooting over her career with .542% and blocks in a season with 49 in 2007-08. She was First Team All-Conference and Second Team All-National Tournament Team in 2008 averaging 21 points and 8 rebounds per game in the national tournament. She later played professional basketball in Sweden. In track, she holds the javelin record with a toss of 138 ‘ 8.50” in 2006.
 
Aaron Nida, Spearfish, Athlete - Football
Aaron Nida, Class of 1993, was an NAIA Honorable Mention All-American in football in 1992 as a defensive back. He was a First Team All- Conference selection in 1989, 1990 and 1992 and First Team All-District in 1992. Aaron pole vaulted 15’0 in 1991 in indoor track, which at the time was second all-time at BHSU. He was the SDIC champion in pole vault in 1990, 1991 and in 1993. He is on the indoor top 10 list at BHSU in the pole vault and 60-meter hurdles. He qualified for indoor nationals in the pole vault in 1992, but did not go because of an injury.
 
Aubrey (Baxter) Schuurmans, Bennington, Neb., Athlete – Track and Field
Aubrey (Baxter) Schuurmans, Class of 2009, was a nine-time All-American in track (shot put four times, hammer throw and weight throw two times, and the discus once). She was the Indoor 20 lb. Weight Throw National Champion in 2007 and the S.D. and National Record Holder in Indoor Shot Put and National Champion 2007. She holds four BHSU records in the shot put, discus, weight throw and hammer throw. She also set a DAC Indoor Meet record in 2008 in the shot put with a throw of 52-7-1/4 and a DAC Indoor Record for weight throw with a toss of 65’03.00 in 2009.
 
Tim Treick, Rapid City, Athlete – Track and Field
Tim Treick, attended, was an All-American in the shot put in indoor track in 1974. He set the BHSU record in shot put with a toss of 55’ 3 1/4”. He placed second in the shot put and discus in the 1974 SDIC meet. In 1975, Tim was the SDIC Champion in the shot put with a throw of 52’ 8” and an SDIC Champion in the discus with a throw of 148’ 4”.
 
Allen Finch, Glenrock, Wyo., Coach – Cross Country and Track and Field
Allen Finch, Class of 1979, coached the Glenrock Wyo., boys cross country teams to three state championships, one runner-up and three thirds. His girls teams won 11 third-place finishes. His boys track teams had two state and five regional championships. His girls track teams had two state runner-ups and eight regional championships. He was the WHSCA Boys Track Coach of the Year in 2000-01, the Absaraka Conference Coach of the Year 12 times, the WHSCA Cross Country Coach of the Year in 1985-86, 1986-87, 1992-93 and 2005-06. He was a National High School Athletic Coaches Association Girls Cross Country National Finalist in 2005 and was inducted into the Wyoming High School Coaches Hall of Fame in 2004.
