ROTC gives direction, career to BHSU alum
Nadim Antar says joining the Army ROTC (Reserve Officers’ Training Corps) at Black Hills State University put him “on the straight and narrow” to finishing his degree and embarking on a military career. It’s that same structure Nadim says he’s proud to provide now to BHSU students as an ROTC instructor.“Being an alum from BHSU and now returning as a government contractor to teach ROTC, it’s great seeing the familiar faces, networking with the new people and the old, and bringing to the table things I wish I would have known as a student cadet,” says Nadim.
While Nadim says the idea of joining the military was always in the back of his mind, his choice of the Army as his military branch was a surprise to his family.
Nadim’s father was in the U.S. Air Force. Born in Hawaii, Nadim grew up in Box Elder on Ellsworth Air Force Base and graduated from Douglas High School.
He attended college for two years in Kansas before transferring to BHSU.
“When I joined ROTC I had no sense of direction. I didn’t know what my goal was in my college career, let alone in my life,” says Nadim.
After his roommate joined ROTC at BHSU, Nadim thought he’d try it out, too. He excelled at the physical training tests and was invited to attend Basic Camp at Fort Knox, Ky. After finishing his 30-day training course he returned to the BHSU ROTC program in great physical and mental shape.
“After achieving that success and my life trending toward the military I became inspired and I wanted more.”
Nadim graduated from BHSU in 2010 with a degree in wellness management. He commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Army. He says he chose this branch because of his sense of adventure and the potential of learning multiple roles and jobs.
When the opportunity to teach ROTC was presented to Nadim, he knew it was the next step in his career.
“My goal is to develop, mentor, and teach students what it’s like to be a leader in today’s military,” says Nadim. “It’s amazing to help strengthen our U.S. military by developing young, strategic, adaptable, and resilient leaders.”
