BHSU to recognize Alumni Award recipients during Swarm Week

Black Hills State University will recognize several honorees during Swarm Week at the annual Alumni Awards Luncheon at noon Friday, Sept. 28 at the Joy Center. Tickets for the luncheon are $20 per person and must be reserved in advance by calling 605-642-6385.

2018 Award recipients include:

Distinguished Alumna, Sandra (Turney) Addy, ’56, Spearfish, earned teaching certification from BH and taught in Ohio and Illinois. Addy earned her bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). She also worked at UIUC in alumni and development positions. Addy took a major role in raising more than $20 million for the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department. Addy and her husband, Tad, retired and settled in Spearfish in 2001. Addy is a member of the BHSU Foundation Board of Directors and several community boards. The Addy’s donated toward the purchase of a Steinway piano for the BHSU Music Department and have included BHSU in their estate plans. 

Excellence in Education, David O. Campbell, ’60, Salem, Ore., earned his bachelor’s in education from BH where he played football and wrestled. His career in teaching and educational leadership started at Spearfish High School where he served as assistant coach to Bill Hughes and the team winning the state wrestling championship. Campbell then taught for nine years in Wyoming and Oregon, before moving into leadership roles including principal, director of community education, and superintendent. He was selected twice as the outstanding Education Service District (ESD) Superintendent in Oregon. Key projects he led included creating innovative school programs and a model rural school district, connecting schools with research and development, telecommunications, and a cost analysis of ESDs. Campbell is known for his outstanding contributions and service to children and their futures.

Special Achievement: David J. Swan, ’76, Los Angeles, Calif., earned an accounting degree from BH. Swan is senior partner of Gursey Schneider, a premier Los Angeles accounting firm. Throughout his 33-year career at Gursey Schneider, Swan has mentored numerous staff and young partners, testified in important trials, and built one of the finest professional practices in California. He grew up east of Newell and attended BH while working part time at Homestake Lumber. After transferring to USD, then back to BH to finish his degree, Swan moved to Texas, then California where he began working for a bankruptcy trustee managing 60+ Chapter 11 entities before his tenure at Gursey Schneider. He has an Aladdin, Wyo., ranch as his getaway spot near family and calls BHSU “The Harvard of the Plains.”

Special Service: Dr. Janeen Larsen, Spearfish, joined the faculty at BHSU in 1978 serving as a professor of music and chair of the Department of Fine and Applied Arts until 2010. She taught a variety of courses in music history, piano and music theory, and received the Distinguished Faculty Award. After retirement, Larsen continues to be an avid supporter of live music and a regular performance volunteer. She founded the BHSU Friends of Music Scholarship organization and serves on the Board of Directors. Larsen continues to be visible in the community as a presenter and fundraiser coordinator. She serves as treasurer for the Black Hills Area Music Teachers.
