Knocked down, getting back up: BHSU-Rapid City student works towards new career

A local, classically-trained chef whose vocation was interrupted with health problems is preparing for a new career in human services at Black Hills State University-Rapid City.

Greg Bom was working as a chef in Portland, Ore., when his life changed dramatically. He was working in a high-volume restaurant and “got burnt out.” His health suffered greatly.

“When you start strong and get knocked down, it gives you perspective. I think that’s a big key in helping others get back on their feet in my new career – understanding people in the place they are, rather than where you think they should be,” says Greg.

After working through medical issues and dependency on narcotics, Greg says he was ready to begin taking steps to get his career back on track.

BHSU-Rapid City met several of Greg’s requirements for going back to school: the right academic programs, convenience, accessibility, and flexibility.

“They offer many different programs at BHSU. I can double major right here in Rapid City – in human services and sociology,” says Greg. “BHSU is convenient because its two miles from my house and I don’t have to make the commute to Spearfish.”

Greg takes all his classes on-site at BHSU-Rapid City. He says the schedule of classes is perfect for his needs.

“I need the class structure face-to-face, and they offer that as an option, as well as online classes. For me, interacting with my professors and classmates in person is the best way to learn.”

Dr. Lesleigh Owen, instructor of sociology, is one of Greg’s favorite professors at BHSU-RC. He appreciates her down-to-earth nature and says she’s given him the tools to understand and combat inequality.

Greg says the staff at BHSU-RC is flexible and accommodates his disability.

“They give me the time and opportunity to be at my best in order to get the best results and best grades possible,” says Greg.

With each class he completes at BHSU-RC, Greg says he can feel himself getting back on track to live the life he envisions for himself and to work in a fulfilling career where he, too, can make an impact.

Classes at BHSU-RC begin Aug. 20. There’s still time to register. Visit www.BHSU.edu/RC or call 605-718-4194.
