First-of-its-kind scholarship at BHSU established by 1970 football team

Members of the 1970 football team at Black Hills State University recently established a scholarship for student-athletes at BHSU. The 1970 football team under the direction of Coach Gene Schlekeway is considered by many to be the best football team ever to compete for BHSU.
The 1970 football team at Black Hills State University recently endowed a $10,000 scholarship for football that will remain in perpetuity. The first scholarship was awarded to Yellow Jackets wide receiver Trey Fleming, an exercise science major from Longmont, Colo.
Steve Meeker, Vice President of University Advancement, said this scholarship endowment is the first of its kind.
"To have a number of teammates accumulate their gifts to reach the $10,000 mark to endow a scholarship in their team's name is tremendous," said Meeker. "In a friendly challenge, we encourage other teams to do the same."
The fund raising effort was led by teammates Ken Richardt and Harvey Krautschun. Although the fund has reached the $10,000 mark, teammates and fans are able to add finances to the fund at any time in the future to provide a larger scholarship annually. Meeker added that he appreciates all the contributions and he also sincerely appreciated the efforts of Richardt and Krautschun.
Richardt says it was the lifelong friendships created through BHSU football that inspired the team to establish the scholarship.
"For many years we had a reunion every five years to get together again as a team. We loved playing football for BHSU and hope this scholarship helps give other students that same experience," said Richardt. "We also want to recognize Charles Linander for his support of the team."

The 1970 football team ended their season as SDIC Tri Champions with a 5-1 conference record and an 8-2 overall record. Team members included Bob Langten, Dean Fudge, Jim Falter, Harvey Krautschun, V.J. Hirsch, Kent Waugh, Lanny Swisher, Rich Schlekeway, Ed Sheridan, Pat Lavery, Galen Dannenbring, Sonny Brooks, Dan O Connor, Randy Langdon, Norm Anderson, Tom Stewart, Gary Peters, Bob Worth, Terry Danielson, Bob Gibson, Chuck Sisk, Bill Fleak, Mark Berdahl, Mike Murphy, Mike McMahon, Bill Shell, Norb Weisbeck, Mike Stafford, Bob Templeton, Keith Schultz, Craig Leckner, Doug Roseth, Keith Glanzer, Ron Young, Roger Risty, George Kuhler, Jerry Pfieffer, Gary Bereiter, Jon Haberman, Mike Hughes, Ralph Meyer, Kirk Stradinger, Terry Burgess, Eldon McNabb, Kent Mauck, Mike Berg, Jim Holwenger, Jerome Lee, Mike Savoy, Ken Richardt, Al Kelley, Paul Georgas, and Dennis Herndon.
