BHSU Research Symposium will showcase student work and keynote speaker Dr. Kyle Whyte

Dr. Kyle Whyte, a visiting professor from Michigan State University, will present the keynote presentation during the Black Hills Research Symposium to be held March 21-23 on the BHSU campus in Spearfish. The BH Research Symposium is a showcase for undergraduate research conducted across various disciplines at BHSU and other institutions in the Black Hills area.

Black Hills State University will host the 19th Annual Black Hills Research Symposium March 21-23 on the BHSU campus in Spearfish.

The Symposium is an interdisciplinary conference designed to showcase the scholarly work of undergraduate and graduate students in the Black Hills region.

The Symposium provides students at BHSU a unique opportunity to work closely with a faculty mentor in developing a meaningful research project to present publicly. Several BHSU students will present research work on a variety of subjects at the Sympoisum.

The keynote speaker this year will be Dr. Kyle Whyte, a visiting professor from Michigan State University. The title of his presentation is "Indigenous environment justice and climate change: Stopping pipelines, decolonizing climate science, indigenizing our futures." He will speak on Thursday, March 23 at 2 p.m. in Clare & Josef Meier Recital Hall on campus in Spearfish.

Whyte is associate professor of philosophy and community sustainability. Whyte holds the Timnick Chair in the Humanities at Michigan State University and is an enrolled member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation.

Whyte is involved in a number of projects through his work with Sustainable Development Institute of the College of Menominee Nation, Tribal Climate Camp, Michigan Environmental Justice Coalition, and Humanities for the Environment, among others.

Whyte received K. Patricia Cross Future Leaders Award from the Association of American Colleges and Universities in 2009 and the Bunyan Bryant Award for Academic Excellence from Detroiters Working for Environmental Justice in 2015.
