BHSU gradaute Megan Hohn to enter professional teaching career

Black Hills State University student Megan Hohn, elementary education major from Ethan, will earn her degree on Saturday, Dec. 12 during the BHSU 170th Commencement Ceremony.

Black Hills State University Honors student Megan Hohn, of Parkston, will receive her elementary education and early childhood special education degree Dec. 12.

A BHSU University Honors Graduate, Hohn defended her Capstone for Honors program "So Much More Than "Just a Game": A Complete Summer Program Curriculum for School-Age Children Aligned to Education Standards" about her research how to apply fun activities in schools and reach the same educational goals.

During her time at BHSU, Hohn was actively involved in organizations including the Honors Club, the Early Childhood Education Organization, Kappa Delta Pi, Jacket Volunteers, South Dakota Education Association, and Teammates. According to Hohn, being involved led to a very good experience and got her involved in the BHSU and Spearfish community a little bit more.

Hohn always knew that she wanted to be a teacher and it was her education and experiences at BHSU that helped her reach that goal, she said.

"The great thing about BHSU is that the education majors get a lot of time in the actual classrooms so I got a lot of practice working with children from infants to sixth graders. I think throughout the experience I figured out what I wanted to do and what age of children I fit best with. I cannot thank my professors enough for this experience, which really prepared me for a future teaching career," Hohn said.

Although away from home, family played a huge part in Hohn's life and her collegiate success. Hohn noted that her mom and dad are her largest inspiration, showing her endless support and love as she earned her education degree.

Some of Hohn's best memories were spent living in the residence halls with her best friend.

"I loved living on campus. We made some of the best memories there and met a lot of interesting people. I will miss the atmosphere of the campus. I will miss friendly faces while walking to classes and the professors who know you by your first name," said Hohn.

After graduation Hohn plans to stay in the Black Hills and substitute teach in the Belle Fourche and Spearfish school districts. Hohn student taught in the Belle Fourche School District during her final semester at BHSU.

"I spent so much time in other teachers' classrooms and I saw things I liked and the things I would do differently. So I'm really excited to build my own classroom," said Hohn.
